Lawrence Hall of Science "product " for grades K-8 has been has been time tested.
ReplyDeleteFor many years we worked with FOSS kits in our K-2 school and it provided a great plan for teaching Science. On the LHS site, the Assoc. Director gave a very helpful overview of the NGSS and its current roll out Nationwide. He explained that , like in all other academic disciplines, students need less memorization and rote skill learning and more active, constructing meaning and problem solving opportunities. He explained that NGSS focus on a student's deep conceptual understanding over time. and that the standards were developed to coincide with other academic learning standards. I know that in Kindergarten, that students exhibit the greatest genuine interest in science observations/experiments and discussions. I often feel I miss capitalizing on this because of a hyper focus on literacy and numeracy skills. I hope our district considers adopting a LHS program to help us all plan on a systematic, thorough, engaging curriculum to implement.
The second website, although it connects with Playground force/ motion study that we did in Kindergarten, focused too much on the Physics behind motion ( graphing-)and was too advanced for use in my Kindergarten class.
I have used Lawrence Hall Of Science material when I was teaching it is excellent. I hope you can get your school to get it for the district.
DeleteHi Ladies,
ReplyDeleteCould anybody get the Lawrence Hall games to work? Am I doing something wrong?
Makes me sad that these are marketed for "After School". Should be done while In School!
As a parent, I always sign my children up for the science enrichment activities after school because I feel as though they are missing science fundamentals. I shouldn't have to. We need to make a change!!!
It is a shame that that they think science should be done after school it is our future.
DeleteOur science teacher received a grant to plant a vegetable garden this year. I just got so excited when I watched Lawrence Hall of Science/Time lapse radish seeds, sprouting tops and roots growing!" The students harvested the radishes they had planted this year TODAY! I can't wait to show this quick video tomorrow! Also, the Oil Spill video will be another great resource to use with next year's kiddos. We have adopted a new structured writing program in the district. In September we read three articles about how the oil spill affected the penguins. We showed the students another video after we read about the spill from three different points of view. I will share this video with my colleagues, so that the kids will have another visual before responding to a writing prompt about the effects of the oil spill on the penguins.
DeleteWhat a wonderful experience having a garden at school. I am glad you found the site helpful. When I was in the classroom we used to do an experiment where the kids tried to clean up an oil spill. They were always amazed at how impossible it was to clean up they could never get all of it. There is a great children’s book called Prince William that would add to that topic.
DeleteThanks RIcki! I am going to purchase! Happy Turkey Day!!
DeleteGreat!!!
DeleteLauren, I had trouble getting on also.
DeleteDo you have a technology teacher that could help??
DeleteI enjoyed looking through the Lawrence Hall of Science Apps., but unfortunately I could not get the games to work either. The Mateo y Cientina cartoons were really well presented I specifically liked the one with the changing water. Since it is talking about the different states of matter water can go through which is a 6th grade standard (Matter and Its Interactions). Another one I feel I may have liked would have been the Earth and Space with the seasons. I could not get any of the apps to come up to show any of the videos that went along with them.
ReplyDeleteThe activity that had the lab info. at the beginning for bridge builders looked very interesting. I may have to try that one with my students. For one of the engineering standards.
Also, I had a hard time getting onto the playground physics the site would not let me do any of the interactive parts. That was a bummer. The site looked very interesting.
I am sorry to hear that you had difficulty with some of the sites. Do you have a tech. Person that might be able to help?
DeleteThe Lawrence Hall of Science site has great activities that can me used in the classroom or as a way to make a home/school connection. I'm going to add this link to website for families that want to bond over science. Their are multiple hands on activities that connect to our curriculum; making an anemometer or growing crystals to name a few. The playground physics app could also be a great middle school activity. Having the students video tape their playground activities and then make the physics/math connection will really connect them to their learning. These were two great resources that were new to me.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you found them helpful. Great idea to have the kids video the playground activities.
DeleteHazel: I agree with Lauren. The Lawrence Hall of Science should be done in the classroom. The activities are simple enough and straight forward. It is good they get to share online, but I think it would be better if the sharing is in the classroom. The topics are wide-ranged enough so that they can accommodate a number of grade levels. The games seem cool as well. I will put this link on my class website.
ReplyDeleteI found Sue’s comment excellent. We have a courtyard that we can do planting. I never could figure out what my students could plant so that they could see the fruit of their labor materialize within the school year. I am going to put radishes on my to-do list next year!
I am going to share Playground Physics with our curriculum supervisor to ask if we could add this to our iPad apps. This sounds like a great app.
There are so many great activities from Lawrence Hall of Science I also feel they should be done in the classroom. Another thought is a Science night where the kids already done the lessons and they could teach their parents a great way to get parent involvement and perhaps funding for science. Holly Hill Farms has n Cohasset is a great resource for starting gardens , many schools use them.I hope you can get Playground Physics for your class.
